In a MIL-STD-1553B system, every device connects to the data bus through a coupler — not directly. The bus coupler performs three essential functions: galvanic isolation via a coupling transformer, main bus protection through built-in series fault-isolation resistors (0.75 × Z₀), and reduction of signal reflections to maintain clean waveform integrity.
Without proper couplers, a single shorted device can collapse the entire bus — an unacceptable failure mode in any avionics or defense platform.
