Keeping Networks Online Where Data Centers Don’t Exist: The Hammond HDME Series

Not every telecom site has raised floors, filtered air, and precision cooling. For the ones that don’t, Hammond’s NEMA 12 HDME server cabinet gives critical network equipment a sealed, heavy-duty home.

Telecom networks are only as reliable as their least protected site. The core may live in a pristine data center, but the edge lives everywhere else: remote terminals, fiber aggregation points in industrial parks, equipment rooms inside utility substations, DAS head-ends in parking structures, and communications shelters at the base of rural towers. These are places where dust, dirt, dripping liquids, and airborne contaminants can become an issue. .

Standard IT cabinets were never designed for that reality. Perforated doors that help airflow in a data hall also invite contaminants straight into switch fans, optical transceivers, and power supplies. Dust and contaminant buildup can create additional maintenance and operating challenges for exposed equipment..

That’s the gap the Hammond HDME Series was built to close.

What Is the HDME Series?

The HDME is a NEMA Type 12 sealed server rack cabinet from Hammond Manufacturing, designed specifically for industrial and harsh environments where a standard IT enclosure isn’t suitable. It pairs the rack-mount conventions network engineers already know (19-inch EIA-310 square-hole rails, full-height 42U and 47U configurations) with the environmental sealing of an industrial control enclosure.

In practical terms, the HDME provides protected rack mounting for network, server and power equipment in industrial and non-traditional IT spaces where a conventional ventilated cabinet may not provide sufficient environmental protection. Thermal management must be selected for the equipment heat load and site conditions.

Built Like Infrastructure, Because It Is

  • 14-gauge welded steel frame with a 3,000 lb load capacity supports densely populated network, server and power equipment installations .
  • NEMA Type 12 rated (UL 508A). Gasketed doors and panels protect against dust, dirt, dripping liquids, and airborne contaminants.
  • 12-gauge square-hole EIA-310 rails. Two pairs of adjustable-depth rails with sliding rail compatibility, plus a starter pack of 10-32 cage nut hardware in the box.
  • Integrated gland plates (top and bottom) support sealed cable entry and environmental protection. .
  • Grounding studs, leveling feet, and caster mounting points come standard on the welded frame.
  • Doors that open to 135°, with an optional window door available by special order.
  • Reinforced top panel with lifting provisions. Lift-tested to 1,000 lb of equipment load when used with Hammond HDMELB lifting eye bolts.
  • Optional filter fans and climate accessories to manage airflow inside a sealed enclosure.

Why It Fits Telecom

Edge & Aggregation Sites

5G backhaul, fiber aggregation, and edge compute nodes are moving into warehouses, industrial buildings, and multi-tenant spaces. The HDME keeps that gear sealed off from the surrounding environment.

Shelters & Remote Terminals

Tower shelters and remote huts see dust, temperature swings, and infrequent maintenance visits. A sealed enclosure can help reduce the amount of dust and other contaminants reaching the equipment, supporting cleaner operating conditions between maintenance visits..

Utility & Carrier Co-Location

Telecom equipment installed alongside utility, SCADA or industrial systems can benefit from a NEMA Type 12 rack enclosure designed for demanding indoor environments.

Government & Secure Networks

TAA compliance and North American manufacturing support public-sector procurement, and the cabinet meets PCI DSS requirements when properly configured and installed.

Grounding and Bonding, Handled

Telecom installations live and die by proper bonding. The HDME’s factory grounding studs give you a defined bonding point on the frame, and the zinc-plated rails provide a solid surface for equipment grounding. Hammond also offers compatible copper bonding busbars and 10 AWG bonding wire kits, to support an organized grounding and bonding installation inside the cabinet..

Cable Entry Without Compromise

Every cable penetration is a potential leak path. Integrated gland plates at the top and bottom let you land fiber trunks, copper, and DC power through properly sized glands or liquid-tight cord grips, helping maintain the required environmental protection when properly selected and installed while keeping cable runs organized.

An Engineer’s Note on Heat

Sealing an enclosure keeps contaminants out, but it also keeps heat in. That’s the real design conversation with any NEMA 12 cabinet, and it’s worth having before the equipment ships.

Hammond offers compatible Type 12 filter-fan configurations with 12 x 12 inch cutouts and airflow ratings from 230 to 368 CFM when paired with the specified exhaust filter. Both 115 V and 230 V versions are available.. As a quick first-pass sizing check, the standard sensible-heat relationship for air is:

Required CFM ≈ (3.16 × Heat Load in Watts) ÷ Allowable Temperature Rise (°F)

This is a preliminary estimate. Final selection must account for ambient temperature, altitude, system resistance, filters, equipment temperature limits and installation conditions. Filtered ventilation cannot cool equipment below ambient temperature.

For example, a 1,000 W equipment load with a 15°F allowable rise above ambient calls for roughly 210 CFM of actual airflow. Use the airflow rating for the selected fan and exhaust-filter configuration. Additional system resistance and filter loading can reduce delivered airflow. If ambient temperatures are high or heat loads are dense, Hammond’s closed-loop climate control options may be the better fit. When in doubt, send us your equipment list and site conditions, and we’ll help you work through it.

Indoor vs. Outdoor

NEMA Type 12 is an indoor rating. For exposed outdoor installations, the HDME belongs inside a shelter, hut, or building. Hammond has noted it is evaluating NEMA 4 and 4X versions of the HDME, which would extend the platform to washdown and outdoor-exposed applications.

Available Configurations

The HDME Series is offered in two heights and two depths, all at a 23.62″ (600 mm) width with 19″ usable mounting width. Finish is black powder coat (RAL 9005) that is GREENGUARD, TSCA, and RoHS compliant.

Part No. Rack Units Overall H x W x D (in) Usable Mounting Depth (in)
HDME2068BK 42U 81.14 x 23.62 x 31.50 25.12
HDME20610BK 42U 81.14 x 23.62 x 39.37 32.99
HDME2268BK 47U 89.02 x 23.62 x 31.50 25.12
HDME22610BK 47U 89.02 x 23.62 x 39.37 32.99

Overall height includes leveling feet. Certifications: UL File # E65324, CSA Cert. # LR21001. REACH and RoHS compliant. Data per Hammond Manufacturing; subject to change.

For deeper telecom and server equipment, the 39.37″ (1,000 mm) depth models provide nearly 33″ of usable mounting depth. The 31.50″ (800 mm) models suit shallower network gear and tighter footprints.
