SETsafe | SETfuse is committed to providing innovative solutions for high standard safety and protection. The manufacturer of circuit protection solutions and components recently launched a new addition to its overvoltage protection solution lineup – the Transient Voltage Suppression (TVS) diode.
What is Transient Voltage Suppression (TVS)?
Transients are short duration spikes in voltage that can damage a circuit, and are generally caused by internal or external connections in a circuit, according to Components 101.
This is where SETsafe | SETfuse’s TVS diodes come into play. Their TVS components are designed to protect your circuits from sudden spikes in voltage or current, or overvoltage events that cause fast transients and electrostatic discharges. TVS is also used to protect sensitive components from electrical overstress caused by induced lighting, inductive load switching, and electrostatic discharge.
The component’s Silicon Avalanche design ensures fast and precise response to all electrical threats to keep all electronic systems, equipment and networks – safe, reliable, and operational.
How Does it Work?
When the transient occurs, the TVS diodes clamp instantly to limit the spike voltage to a safe level, called the “clamping voltage,” while conducting potentially damaging current away from the protected component, and then recovers when the threat goes away.
In essence, SETsafe | SETfuse’s TVS diodes reduce the amount of harmful electrical discharges reaching the protected electronics. Their low capacitance allows them to be utilized across communication and signaling components without reducing transmission and performance.
Their P-N junctions have a larger cross-sectional area than those of a normal diode, allowing them to conduct large currents to ground without damage. P-N junction diodes are designed to nullify sudden or momentary overvoltage effects on sensitive semiconductors and circuits, according to Components 101.
How are TVS diodes different from standard or Zener diodes? While standard and Zener diodes can be used for overvoltage protection, they are not as robust as TVS diodes because standard and Zener diodes are used mainly for rectification and voltage regulation, states Components 101.
SETsafe | SETfuse’s TVS diodes are available in uni-directional and bi-directional configurations, power ratings, and packaging configurations to satisfy many applications.
