AEM, a leading developer and manufacturer of surface mount device (SMD) components, is well-known in the electronic fuse industry for superior quality and high performance, even in the most extreme conditions. With over 35 years in business, AEM circuit protection technologies can be found protecting systems in many different products, including satellites, EV battery packs, laptops, displays, battery powered tools, and many more. One of AEM’s bestselling innovative technologies, and the main subject of today’s blog, is the SolidMatrix® product line. Please read on to learn more.
AEM’s SolidMatrix solid body chip fuse products feature multi-layer ceramic co-firing technology to provide a more compact structure, with embedded fuse links to isolate moisture and acid erosion. As compared to other similar solid body fuses, the monolithic structure of SolidMatrix is capable of higher current ratings in a smaller package, has a wider operating temperature range, and offers stable operating characteristics in extreme conditions.
So, during an overload condition, the fuse and blowing elements are designed to withstand the elements. The structure is also less susceptible to mechanical damage or outgassing during current overload conditions. That’s the secret sauce.
To protect against catastrophic failures and high-stress conditions, the proprietary construction of SolidMatrix allows for the metal fusing elements to be defused into the ceramic. Plus, its central location ensures that the energy is contained within the body. SolidMatrix also features a silver terminal that has no risk of sulfide, with the fuse and arc suppressing material buried inside the fuse body.
With conventional chip fuses, if there is a high over-current fault condition, it could lead to surface melting or cracking. But this is not the case with SolidMatrix.
If the product’s fuse link opens, there is no fly arc or spark leak. The fuse element is diffused into the ceramic body, so its mechanical integrity is maintained, and the airtight package is preserved – with no external signs of damage or arcing after opening, preventing secondary reactions and damage to other components on the printed circuit board. This is one of the big benefits of SolidMatrix fuses.
AEM’s SolidMatrix solid body chip fuses are offered in EIA 0402, 0603, and 1206 case sizes with fast-acting, slow blow, and high in-rush models providing excellent secondary overcurrent protection for DC power applications.
